Y Daith: Oberammergau

In the documentary series exploring the meaning of religion, faith and belief in today's world, Y Daith, (The Journey) we follow a group from Clwyd on their trip to see the famous Oberammergau Passion Play in Bavaria in Germany.

The Passion Play is held every ten years. This year, 2,000 actors, singers, musicians and technicians were part of the performance. They all live in the village of Oberammergau, or have been born there.

The first Passion Play was held in the village in 1634, when the villagers vowed to perform a drama about the life and death of Christ every 10 years if they were spared from the plague that had hit the area.

This particular trip has been organised by the Rev. Wayne Roberts of Llanrhaeadr. He has 11 chapels in his care, and rumour has it he's also a very successful trip organiser!

"You have to have religion and chips," he says. "You have to have enjoyment on these trips."

There's much excitement as the group members prepare for their journey. One person who is really looking forward to the experience is Enid Mair Davies from Eglwysbach. "It's an oppportunity to fulfill a life's dream," says Enid, who lost her daughter, Meinir, three years ago. "It's hard. It's hard with faith," she adds. "God doesn't stop you from experiencing bereavement but God does support you."
