We follow two old friends as they travel along the pilgrims' trail between Cwm-hir Abbey in Powys to Strata Florida Abbey (known in Welsh as Ystrad Fflur) in Ceredigion.
Cwm-hir Abbey was established by the Cistercians in 1143, and this is where the last Prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, is buried. It's believed that Strata Florida Abbey was established by the Cistercians in 1164, under the patronage of Lord Rhys, Prince of Deheubarth. It's said that the poet Dafydd ap Gwilym was buried here in 1380 under an yew tree which still flourishes today.
The two travellers on this pilgrimage are Charles Arch and Lyn Ebenezer. Charles is a well known figure in Welsh agricultural circles, and Lyn has made his mark as an astute journalist and author. Both of them were brought up in the Pontrhydfendigaid area, and both of them have now returned there to live, after a long period of absence.
Listening to the two friends leisurely chatting, we'll also share their memories and experiences, and we'll see the influence of the church and chapel on their lives today.
Since returning home, Strata Florida Church has played a big part in Charles' life, and he is now the Church Warden. Lyn worships and preaches at Rhydfendigaid Chapel after recently returning to the habit of going to chapel. "I never lost my faith but the excuse was they didn't need me there. When I preach, I try and create a popular sermon which isn't too theological. From the minute we are born, we start a journey, and it's a one way journey," he says.
