Yr Wyddfa a'i Chriw

Yr Wyddfa a'i Chriw

This new documentary looks at a major project to build a new visitor information centre and café – called Hafod Eryri - on the summit of Snowdon.

In Yr Wyddfa... a’i Chriw (Snowdon and its crew), viewers follow the progress of this challenging build through the eyes of six people who have made an important contribution to its success.

“We see the project from a personal point of view,” says programme producer, Iestyn Garlick, “and appreciate how important every individual contribution is to the success of the build.”

The six people we’ll be following during the programme are Geraint Bowen, an engineer with the ARUP company at Wrexham, train driver Gwyrfai Williams from Llanberis, Tecwyn Hughes, buildings’ manager with Snowdonia National Park, labourer Eifion Yates who comes originally from the Bala area, stonemason Robin Hughes from the Nantlle Valley, and Gwyn Thomas, originally from Blaenau Ffestiniog, who now lives in Bangor. Recently retired from his post as the National Poet of Wales, Gwyn has composed several couplets, in both Welsh and English, which will be inscribed onto the windows of the new building.

Filming began in September 2006, and the production crew, along with the team working on the new centre, have faced several difficulties since then, not least, bad weather.

“Every single person, and every material used in the build, has to be taken to the summit by train,” explains Iestyn.

“We often went up first thing in the morning with the workers, and then were unable to come down from the summit until 6.00pm, as the weather was too bad for us to walk safely down the mountainside.

“Following the busy workers as they make such an important contribution to the Hafod Eryri project has been an eye opener for us as a crew. It has been a privilege to be part of this ambitious challenge, and to see the new centre going up on the top of Snowdon.”
