Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau

In their heyday, Maffia Mr Huws were one of the most influential bands around and had a huge impact on the Welsh-language music scene during the early eighties and nineties.

Fans of the Bethesda band, albeit old and new, were gearing up for their comeback as Maffia headlined the Friday evening gig at Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, one of Europe’s most popular musical festivals.

Maffia’s performance on Friday, 20 July, was one of the highlights of S4C’s coverage of the two-day event presented by Huw Stephens and Lisa Gwilym, which provides an intriguing rainbow line-up of rock, reggae, world and folk music.

Although the band made its debut at the Sesiwn Fawr, Maffia performed at the Pesda Roc festival last year on home turf. Over recent years they’ve also performed at the Bryn Terfel Tân y Ddraig concert and a gig to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Welsh-language magazine, Golwg.

Other artists who joined Maffia Mr Huws at this year’s Sesiwn Fawr were Steve Earle, Ryland Teifi, the Dubliners, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Meic Stevens, Genod Droog, Gwibdaith Hen Frân and Radio Luxembourg – all featured on S4C’s coverage.
