Summer 2007

Flintshire and District National Eisteddfod

All the buzz and excitement of the stage competitions and the Eisteddfod field could be seen live from the first to the last Saturday of the festival on S4C digidol every day.

The presenting team included Huw Llywelyn Davies, Alwyn Humphreys and Sara Gibson in the studio, with Shân Cothi and Mari Grug bringing all the behind-the-stage news and whispers. Tara Bethan and Morgan Jones were roaming the Eisteddfod field, while Rhun ap Iorwerth presented the evening programmes.

This year, thanks to red button technology, S4C viewers didn’t miss one catchy line of poetry from the Literary Pavilion at the Flintshire National Eisteddfod.

By using the red button service on their digital televisions on Sky and Freeview, S4C viewers could enjoy all the literary activities as if they were there. This new service was also available to Virgin TV viewers on S4C2 (channel 195).

Mari Lovgreen presented the hectic schedule from the Literary Pavilion which featured everything from discussion sessions and the ‘Story of the Day’ to the popular poets’ competition, Ymryson y Beirdd.

Mari says, “I’ve been part of the Eisteddfod presentation team for three years and am now really looking forward to this new challenge. The Literary Pavilion has a wide-ranging programme during the week, It has something to offer people of all ages, with people queuing for hours to get in. Luckily, the service on S4C2 will mean everyone is guaranteed a seat.”

Chaired bard Tudur Dylan Jones, who adjudicated the Ymryson, was also excited about the new development. He says, “It’s great that the Literary Pavilion is now accessible to everyone. When only a few hundred could previously enjoy the poetic jousting, thousands will now be able to tune in live on television.”
