Summer 2007

Faenol Festival

S4C will broadcast extended coverage of Bryn Terfel’s highly successful Faenol Festival – the eighth to be held – including two special programmes.

The rock concert Tân y Ddraig (Dragon’s Fire), which celebrates the 30th anniversary of BBC Radio Cymru’s Welsh language service will be broadcasted on S4C. Those performing include some of the best known artists in Wales’ rock and pop scene. Among them will be Bryn Fôn and his band, Huw Chiswell, Y Sibrydion, Frizbee, Steve Eaves and Fflur Dafydd.

S4C will screen the festival’s Operatic Gala with Bryn Terfel himself topping the bill in the company of the world famous Verdi baritone from Spain, Carlos Alvarez. The Italian tenor, Fabio Armiliato, the famous soprano from Pontrhydyfen, Rebecca Evans and mezzo-soprano, Christine Rice will also perform. They will be joined by the orchestra of Welsh National Opera under the baton of Gareth Jones.

Since the two met performing ‘Falstaff’ in Vienna some years ago, Carlos Alvarez has been on Bryn’s list of people to invite to appear at the Faenol Festival.

Bryn says, “Every year this festival develops, attracting more amazing artists as its international reputation grows. I’m always delighted to welcome them to this very special and stunningly beautiful corner of Wales and to introduce them to the wonderful and growing Faenol audience.”

Rob Nicholls, S4C Content Editor Culture, adds, “S4C’s programmes will provide an opportunity for those who didn’t get to Faenol this year to enjoy the highlights of the event which is proving more ambitious and more successful year by year.

“From classical music to pop and rock, there’ll be plenty for viewers to choose from and with names such as Bryn Terfel, Carlos Alvarez, Rebecca Evans and Bryn Fôn on stage, the performances will undoubtedly be memorable.”
