Eisteddfod Gerddorol Ryngwladol Llangollen

S4C presented a comprehensive package of programmes from the International Musical Eisteddfod this year. As well as the evening highlights programmes on S4C on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Alwyn Humphreys presented the stage competitions in the afternoon on S4C digidol.

Nia Roberts presented the Choir of the World competition on the last Saturday of the Eisteddfod. S4C also broadcasted the concert by world-renowned tenor José Carreras live on Sunday, 15 July.

Talented singer Elin Manahan Thomas was looking forward to the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod for more than one reason. She released her first CD, ‘Eternal Light’, during the week of the festival and more importantly, she was presenting for the first time from the Eisteddfod field, in the company of Rhodri Owen.

“I’m looking forward to it very much and am extremely pleased to have the opportunity,” says the soprano who comes originally from the town of Gorseinon, near Swansea. “Of all the Eisteddfodau, Llangollen is my favourite because of the international aspect, and there’s more taking part than competing, with the singing and dancing spilling over onto the maes and the town. This is a festival full of ‘hwyl’ and energy!”

She should feel at home in Llangollen as she competed there whilst at school.

“I competed with Ysgol Gyfyn Gwyr. What I remember most is that I didn’t really realise that Llangollen is an Eisteddfod. It feels like a festival, rather than a competition, and our school choir had a fantastic time meeting people from all over the world, tasting the food, and spending too much money on the maes (field).

“I’m looking forward to eating the exotic food on the maes this year. And hearing the different voices that are created by different cultures. I’m always amazed at the massive differences between us, as people, and how each country has its own specific way of nurturing voices. The choirs from Russia, Africa and Australia are always an eye opener for me – or perhaps an ear opener. And the costumes – oh, to have such vibrant colours on every stage!”
