Between July and November 2002, workers recovered over 1700 pieces of timber from the site and transferred them to water storage tanks. The work is now continuing to record these pieces and preserve them, with the ultimate intention of reassembling the ship. The experts are looking at the way the ship was constructed, trying to answer questions such as how she would have sailed and how much cargo she would have been able to carry.

The whole conservation process will take between ten and fifteen years. The timbers must be treated very carefully, and must be kept wet at all times. Newport City Council are backing the project, and the current plan that the ship will be reassembled in a dedicated display area at the city’s Arts Centre.
