Nautical Antiques

  • Siân and David Rogers Jones
  • Sian and David Rogers Jones

In the period when Welsh sailors were travelling to exotic destinations all over the globe, many of them returned home with mementoes of their travels. As a consequence, many homes in Welsh ports contain interesting and valuable nautical antiques that have been passed down through the generations.

Sian Pari Huws called on the auctioneer David Rogers Jones in Colwyn Bay to hear his opinion on various maritime antiques, including a nautical clock that used to belong to her father.

Sailors returned home from foreign ports with many a pretty trinket, just like modern-day tourists, and David’s advice is that for an item to be valuable it must have been picked up before the 1950s.

One piece that Sian showed him was a carved piece of wood which is claimed to come from the wreck of the Royal Charter. But according to David, there are so many relics on Anglesey that are said to come from this ship that if every one were true, the Royal Charter would have been an enormous vessel!
