Programme 4

Travelling in Wales is as popular today as it was in the days of Geraldus Cambrensis and Tomos Pennant, the founding father of tourism in 'Cambria'. As well as writing about local people, he described animal and plant life, science and the natural world, beautifully illustrated by Moses Griffith. Cattle drovers were among the regular travellers through south Wales, and here you can find out how their financial success led to establishing a bank in 1799. Known then as Banc y Ddafad Ddu” (the Black Sheep Bank), it’s better known today for its black horse!
