New series of Newid Byd!
A new group of young people embark on the adventure of a lifetime in the second series of NEWID BYD. Luis, Rachel, Ceri and Iestyn have their eyes opened in Uganda in Africa as they volunteer on various charity projects, under Arwel Phillips’ leadership. During the course of the series, we’ll see them struggling to cope with physical building work in the intense heat, try their hand at bead and jewellery making, being creative when setting up a school library, and getting their hands dirty planting trees and harvesting Fair Trade coffee. As well as physical work, they will have to face emotional challenges too, hearing from women and children who are suffering from HIV and seeing the realities of extreme everyday poverty for those children living in Namatala slum.
A series that is full of challenges, adventure and emotion. Will the team be shocked? Will the experience make them think twice about the things they take for granted? Who’s world will change after this?

- Arwel: Great to experience being on the longest river! No crocs in this area but plenty of other wildlife!
- Iestyn: Amazing feeling to know that we have been rafting on the longest river in the world.
- Luis: Had fun on the Nile river seeing all kinds of wildlife. Don't want to go home!
- Ceri: Bukhumwa school children really pleased with their new, colourful library, and all the reading books. I hope they really enjoy using it.
- Rachel: Really pleased that we finished the library, to see the kids' reaction. And I still believe that the girls' side is much better than the boys'.
- Newid Byd: Last few days in Uganda. Time has flown.
- Arwel: Hope the nails will be better and stronger this time, while building the library shelves, compared to building the goat shed!
- Luis: Looking forward to painting the library and seeing it finished.
- Ceri: Have started on our last project today - feels odd but hope we can end on a high and that the library looks great.
- Rachel: Feels great to be back amongst children. Now can't wait to see the end result of the library transformation.
- Iestyn: Amazing to see how the Ugandan people find so many uses and benefits to growing trees.
- Luis: So interesting to see coffee cherries on the trees + how they are processed! Weather is terrible but the drivers are great!
- Rachel: Drivers were brave or bonkers, not sure which, when driving down the mountain!
- Iestyn: I have no more nails left after seeing the minibuses sliding down the mountain roads - thank god we weren't in them!
- Ceri: So cold! Never expected so much rain in Africa! Stuck in the mud! Wakestock weather!
- Iestyn: Have enjoyed my 18th birthday in Uganda. Appreciated the cake; celebrated with a great group!
- Iestyn: On factor 50 but have caught the sun! So hot!
- Ceri: Never thought that trees make such a difference to people's lives!
- Rachel: Have learnt a lot about the benefits of trees and impact of climate change. Enjoyed being part of Size of Wales' project to plant a million trees; potting the plants was good fun! Not keen on the hens though!!
- Newid Byd: He was so shocked to see the cake and read all the cards and letters from home!
- Newid Byd: Goat shed is up and finished! Fit for a queen goat!
- Ceri: Very tired tonight after working hard trying to finish the goat shed!
- Iestyn: Enjoyed carrying the water from the well to Robert and his family today.
- Rachel: I thought I was fit until I had to carry water for 1km in the heat today!
- Arwel: Have lost 14 pounds in sweat!! But every drop of sweat worth the effort!
- Iestyn: Have put the framework in place; only the roof, the sides and the guttering to do tomorrow. Just hope we can finish everything in time! Cross fingers!
- Luis: Enjoying the building work! Also had fun running after a young goat on Dolen Ffermio's farm.
- Ceri: Building a goat shed proving more difficult than I thought! Sweating under the sun!

- Rachel: The goat shed is difficult to build - with blisters already, but it's a different experience and enjoying myself.

- Luis: A happy service - everybody singing. Very different to how people worship at home.
- Ceri: A very interesting service today - very energetic! A different experience!
- Iestyn: Have attended a church service today. Enjoyed the singing and dancing. The people of Uganda are so passionate about their religion.
- Arwel: Enjoyed chatting to a new group of people and hearing their stories. Tried plaiting a purse out of palm leaves but learnt that I can't count to 2!!
- Newid Byd: Newid Byd? It was Newid Beads! Making beads with HIV+ women.
- Luis: Terrible to see Rahim in the group but enjoyed making all the beads!
- Ceri: Found it difficult to interview 15 year old Rahim, who is HIV+. He has already lost his father, but good to see that the bead making project is helping somewhat.
- Iestyn: Sad to see so many people affected by HIV but glad to see the support they receive from each other.
- Rachel: Enjoyed learning how to make beads! Looking forward to meeting Madina, one of the HIV positive ladies in the enterprise group this afternoon.
- Newid Byd: Everybody emotional to leave the children at Child of Hope school. Sad to leave them in such circumstances.
- Arwel: The heavens have opened. One minute it's boiling hot, the next it's raining cats and goats!
- Ceri: Everybody so nice and welcoming. Really enjoying spending time with the kids.
- Rachel: Shocked to see that the simplest things make the children happy. Also enjoyed seeing the community's reaction when we built them a new washroom yesterday.
- Iestyn: Mark's story really made an impact. Sad to see the state of his house but inspiring to hear that he wants to study to be a doctor.
- Luis: Enjoying the food! Really liked building the washroom shed yesterday.
- Rachel: Just been to Namatala slum and already fallen in love with the little kids!
- Luis: Time flying by! Enjoying everything. Worth all the travelling!
- Ceri: Child of Hope's work is amazing.
- Iestyn: Eye opener to see how grateful everyone is.
