Bendigeidfran son of Llyr is king of Britain, and widely respected as a wise and fair ruler. He has a brother and sister, Dan and Branwen, and a half brother, Efnisien. They all get along well, apart from Efnisien. He manages to create friction between them even when they're the best of friends.
One day, Matholwch, king of Ireland, comes to Wales to ask for Branwen's hand in marriage, and Bendigeidfran gives his consent. Efnisien vehemently opposes this because he wasn't consulted, and his ensuing actions triggers bitter wars between the two countries for many years.
In the final bloody battle in Ireland, all but seven of the Welsh soldiers are killed - the survivors include Dan and Pryderi. Furthermore, Bendigeidfran is decapitated and his head is brought back to Britain for burial.
