Episode 9 (2009/2010)

Defi lives in Pen Talar with Doug and Siân while his daughter, Mari, studies art in University. They're happy until something that happened in 1962 returns to disrupt their lives and it's time to fight once again.

Episode 8 (1997)

It's the night of the referendum and there's excitement across the country. But instead of celebrating, tragedy strikes as Awen dies following a car accident. Defi blames himself for the accident and things are very bleak in Pen Talar.

Episode 7 (1997)

It's 1997 and the Labour party have won the general election. With Labour in power, Defi throws himself into the devolution campaign. He lives in Pen Talar with Awen their daughter, Mari, and Siân.

Episode 6 (1990)

Defi has thrown himself back into Cardiff life after the drama of the eighties during the miner's strike and has started a career as a writer. His mother has alzhimers but he hasn't got time to help his sister who looks after her. In the midst of all this his girlfriend from school, Awen, returns to his life.

Episode 5 (1984)

With the Miners' Strike at its height, Defi now teaches in a secondary school in the South Wales Valleys. Defi has taken a step back from public life and from campaigning on a national front - instead he has decided to concentrate on educating and inspiring young minds in a community struggling to cope with the poverty that the strike has brought.

Episode 4 (1979)

When we catch up with Defi aged 27 in episode 4, he is working as a lecturer in the LSE and lives with Isobel, his girlfriend from college days. He splits up with Isobel at the beginning of the episode, moves back to Wales and gets embroiled in extremist Welsh politics once more.

Episode 3 (1974)

Defi is now 22 and making the most of being a student at Aberystwyth University. He is getting more and more embroiled in radical and extremist politics and enjoying the hedonistic lifestyle of college life.

Episode 2 (1969)

Defi is now 17 and taking an active interest in politics. He's blossomed into a strong, patriotic, passionate young man. He's considered a brain box and doesn't hang out with the mainstream, rugby orientated in-crowd of the sixth form. A charismatic outsider.

Episode 1 (1962 - 1963)

Defi is 10 years old at the beginning of the series and from the Tywi Valley near Carmarthen. From a middle-class family, he's well-educated and cosseted by his mother but has an independent streak.

Defi is very much his father's son. Even at the age of 10, Defi admires his father hugely. Defi is bright, inquisitive and a loyal friend to Douglas.
