As well as being treasured family possessions, they can offer clues to help you discover more about your family history.
Clothing and hats can help you locate your family. Until the 1930’s most people still made their own clothes or bought outfits through local tailors or seamstresses. These craftsmen and women would often sew labels into the clothes. Use this information to search the trade directories to discover when and where they worked.
Do you have military medals in your family? Medals can often note the soldier’s name and regiment which can help you discover more about their military career. Contact the regimental museums or the War Museum in London for further help to search the military archives.
Do you have any old family furniture or old letters or post cards? These old personal items are invaluable as you try to get to know your ancestors.
Touching and appreciating the very things that meant so much to your ancestors is a special experience – better than any formal or legal document!
