St Fagans’ Quilts

The quilts below, from St Fagans: National History Museum, can be seen on Pethe, March 16th, and from March 20th they will be on display at a major exhibition at London’s V&A museum.

Below:  The central diamond contains a flower motif; the others feature alternating four-leaf and double spiral motifs.

The coverlet below was made by James Williams, a tailor from Wrexham, over a period of 10 years, from 1842 to 1852.

The coverlet reflects the self-confidence of Victorian Britain and a growing sense of national pride in the technological achievements of the day. Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge, (seen  below, lower picture) in particular, became an icon of engineering, inspiring countless travelling artists and poets.
