The original film was commissioned as part of the Festival of Britain to celebrate the cultures of these islands after the long years of war. It tells the story of poet and school caretaker, David Rees Griffiths, (with David played by himself). The film suggests that he has "failed" by not getting an education and leaving the area like his brother, the M.P. Jim Griffiths.

In the new film, Tom Hamer, Sara Richards, Mererid Davies and Juliana Hughes all reflect on what success means to them, and whether leaving the area, or staying, is the key.
