Programme 1
Popeth yn Wyrdd - Programme 1
Watch the exclusive clip of the programme 1 project (no subtitles)
In this programme, Ifor goes to Newcastle Emlyn to see if it's possible to rid the town of its plastic bags. He'll need the support of the council as well as the town's traders and inhabitants. How will it all pan out?
Campaign Update
The campaign has gone from strength to strength in Castell Newydd Emlyn. Several traders have said that they won't be stocking up on plastic bags when their current supply is finished. In addition, the council intends to put signs up in the town to tell people that it's on its way to being a plastic bag-free zone.

Organising a Plastic Bag Free town campaign
- Visit the website for Modbury – the UK's first plastic bag-free town – to research the numerous reasons for starting a campaign in your area - www.plasticbagfree.com
- Contact and speak to the local council to establish support for the campaign.
- Persuade local traders to support the campaign.
- Visit the local school and the church / chapel to ask for help with the campaign e.g. to make cotton bags to sell locally, and the school could hold a competition to design a logo for the bags.
- Fix a date and location to hold a meeting for town traders in order to discuss the implications of becoming a plastic bag free town. The local council may be willing to help with this cost.
- Put up posters, distribute flyers and send out as a press release to advertise the meeting.
- Invite speakers, e.g. a representative from Keep Wales Tidy or a local environmental group, to address the meeting
- After the meeting organise a showing (which is also open to the public) of the film 'Hawaii – Message in the Waves' or other films which examine the issue (further details on the Modbury website).
- Hold a vote to establish support for the campaign and choose a specific date in the meeting to work towards becoming plastic bag-free.
- Raise local awareness of the result of the vote.
