Programme 2
We all need a little ambition in life, and as Ifor looks at the issue of food miles, he comes up with a plan to set up a local produce market on Anglesey – nothing if not ambitious. He will need a suitable location and food suppliers as well as a licence...

Setting up a Local Produce Market
- Visit a successful Local Produce Market and speak to the organiser.
- Decide on a suitable area to hold the market (ensuring that there isn’t one there already!).
- To ensure availability of stall holders choose a date (e.g. second Thursday of the month) that doesn't clash with other markets.
- Find and rent a suitable venue, e.g. community hall, school hall or car park.
- Contact the local council to organise a Day Market Licence, and contact the Trading Standards department for guidance.
- Measure the surface area of the venue or ask the owner for a floor plan and decide how much to charge stallholders by taking in to account the number of stalls that can fit in to the space. Also bear in mind other likely costs e.g. newspaper advertisements and road signs.
- Invite local food producers to the market, ensuring that there is variety of produce.
- Ensure that stall holders have public liability insurance and that the venue itself is insured. Any stalls preparing food on the day will also need a food handing certificate.
- Carry out a Risk Assessment (optional - Local Authority may help with this).
- Organise road signs. Official road signs will have to be organised through a professional company who will need to apply to the council for planning permission. Organise posters/ leaflets / newspaper adverts. Send out a press release advertising the market to the local media.
- Organise entertainment (optional – e.g. invite the local school choir).
