Ifor turns his attention to our travelling habits in this programme. Ifor encourages four young friends from Cardiff to use their cars less. The results are mixed; Nia cycles to the Bay, and Trystan attempts to travel from Pontrhydfendigaid to Cardiff by bus and train.
Back in the day, children would walk to and from their local schools wherever they lived. With traffic conditions clogging up school bus routes, and parents driving their children to school, is it time to revisit the old-style school run?

Setting up a ‘Walking Bus’
- Ask your children if they like the idea of walking to school with their friends.
- Contact other parents in your area to see if they support the idea of setting up a walking bus. On average, walking buses have a maximum of 15 children with a rota of between 6 and 10 parents to supervise. You should also start thinking of possible routes and 'stops' for the walking bus.
- When you have enough support amongst parents, contact the Head of the school.
- The Head will need to contact the Road Safety Unit of the local council to explain that parents are keen to set up a walking bus.
- The Road Safety Unit will be able to advise on a route, complete a risk assessment, instruct the parents who will supervise the walking bus and provide high-visibility jackets for the children.
- Enjoy the walk to school once the bus is up and running!
