Junction hoping to emulate the Borough

Borough United ar y ffordd i Melita

Saturday will see Llandudno Junction Football Club taking on The New Saints in the Welsh Cup fourth round - probably the biggest game in the club's history since the town's name reappeared in Welsh football's history books back in the 1980s.

Whilst the new club hope to make a name for themselves with a big scalp in the Welsh Cup, one club in Junction's family tree have already made their mark in both the Welsh Cup and in Europe.

In 1954 both Llandudn Junction and Conway Borough football clubs were enduring a miserable season both on and off the field - only Bethesda finished below them in the Welsh League (North) - and with both clubs battling to attract the same supporters and the same sponsors, it was decided to unite both clubs and form Borough United FC.

The new club didn't have the best of starts finishing 14th out of 18 in the league, but as the club grew, success soon followed.

More  Spirit of the Borough

The 1958/59 saw Borough score an incredible 146 goals on the way to clinching the Championship and their Nant y Coed home became a fortress as they went on a four year unbeaten run at home.

Borough UnitedBut it was the 1962/63 which was responsible for ensuring Borough United's place in Welsh footballing folklore.

As well as reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, Borough surprised everybody in the Welsh Cup.

After beating near neighbours, Llandudno, in the third round, they beat Rhyl, Denbigh Town and the holders, Bangor, before beating Hereford United of the Southern League in the semi final.

Not many commentators gave them much hope in the final, especially as their opponents were Fourth Division side, Newport County.

In those days, the final was a two legged affair and in the first leg at Nant y Coed Borough managed to come back from goal down to win 2-1 thanks to a Billy Russell penalty and a late goal from Joe Bebb, who had joined Borough from Pwllheli earlier in the season.

For the second leg at Somerton Park, Borough took the unprecedented step of flying down to Cardiff from hawarden airport.

And their travel arrangements paid off as Borough managed to secure a goal-less draw ensuring they took the famous trophy back to Llandudno Junction.

The victory meant a place in Europe the following season as the Welsh representatives in the European Cup Winners Cup.

But despite the club's success, they only had £4 in the bank at the start of the following season and a desperate fund raising effort was needed before they could embark on their European adventure!

The first round draw saw Borough paired with Sliema Wanderers of Malta and the team endured a nightmare flight from Liverpool Airport as their aeroplane was forced to land in Marseilles because of engine trouble.

Borough finally arrived at in Malta four hours before the scheduled kick off time and, under the circumstances, a goal-less draw was  an achievement in itself.

Borough UnitedOver 17,000 supporters crammed into Wrexham's Racecourse ground for the return leg and the crowd were not disappointed as Borough ran out 2-0 winners and became the first Welsh club to reach the second round of a European competition.

In the second round, Borough were drawn to face a star studded Slovan Bratislava side - the Czechoslovakian cup holders - and amongst the Slovan players was a certain Josef Venglos who had short spells in charge of both Aston Villa and Celtic in the 1990s.

The Eastern European side was too strong for Borough's part-time player winning 1-0 at The Racecourse before bringing Borough's European trip to an end with a 3-0 victory in Bratislava.

Sadly enough, Borough's very existence came to an abrupt end just six years after their European exploits as the landlords of their Nant y Coed home, a Roman Cathlic Order from Dublin, ordered the club to vacate the ground.

Without a field the club were forced to resign from the Welsh League and folded completely in 1969.

Although the current Llandudno Junction club are not direct descendants of Borough United, the spirit of 1962/63 will surely be present at the Flyover ground on Saturday.
