Jason Koumas has retired from international football with immediate effect.
After confirming that he was unavailable for selection for Wales' World Cup qualifier against Russia on Wednesday night due to a hamstring injury, the Wigan midfielder, 29, also informed manager John Toshack that he was also retiring from international football completely.
Since making his debut for Wales against Ukraine in 2001, Koumas has won 34 caps and scored 10 goals. However, there have been persistent doubts regarding his commitment to the national team, particularly when traveling to away games overseas.
In a short statement on the Football Assocation of Wales website, John Toshack thanked Koumas for his service to the national team over the years and wished him well to the future with Wigan.
