A Towering Achievement

Today when people win an award or title they might organise a party, or go out for a fine meal and crack open a bottle of champagne. Back in 1821 Joseph Huddart did all those things to celebrate being knighted at the coronation of George IV, but he also went a step further by erecting an impressive gothick tower in Cwm Pennant, Snowdonia.

If the building wasn’t such a finely crafted piece of neo-medieval architecture we could berate him for showing off. Viewers can see the tower as well as three other truly amazing homes on Y Tŷ Cymreig this week.

Twr Bryncir
The six-storey fashionable folly stood testament to the wealth (and vanity) of its builder for decades, but it eventually fell on hard times.

Poultry House
Another amazing piece of nineteenth century fantasy architecture is the Poultry House on the Leighton estate near Welshpool, now managed by the Landmark Trust.

Penwhilwr
The good news is that quirky and amazing homes are still being built, as we found at Penwhilwr in St Dogmael’s.

Min-Y-Mor
But it was Min-Y-Mor, a converted railway carriage overlooking the beautiful Ceredigion coast that really grabbed my attention.
