Bungalow Bliss

I'm not a fan of bungalows. In my opinion some of the worst Welsh architecture is to be found in the low-slung form of the rural bungalow. Yet you have to admit that if the Welsh build anything well, then it must be the bungalow. We once built farms and cottages, and, erm.... now we seem to build bungalows.

Hence when it came to deciding the themes for the current series of 'Y Ty Cymreig', all of us at production company Fflic were agreed that the bungalow had to be in there. Love them or loathe them, you can’t deny that the bungalow has won its place in the history of the Welsh house. more....

Calderbrook Lodge
Our earliest bungalow has that feel of a traditional colonial home that is the root of the bungalow form, only Calderbrook Lodge was imported from Sweden not India!

Bryndedwydd
Our second bungalow is as also pretty as a picture, built in the 1920s in Llanfair Caereinion.

Llys-y-Gwynt
Llys-y-Gwynt, in the Swansea Valley does have a few stairs as it is a dormer bungalow, but its owners Tom and Jean Rees are as happy as can be with their self-built home.

Llyn Du
But if any viewers are still not convinced that bungalows can be beautiful, I would point them to our final example of single-storey living.
