Y Faner

But to see one of these impressive ancient roofs up close viewers get to see inside Y Faner, Llanelltyd, where the huge hall was floored over in the 1930s. This means that the family who live there today get to lie in bed and enjoy a beautiful roof structure that most of us only ever see in the best churches or cathedrals.

A working farm today, it seems that the ancient building started life as the Abbot's house for Cymer Abbey. After the dissolution the house passed into the estates of Nannau and Hengwrt before being bought by the family of current owners Peter and Nia Rowlands. To have split the great hall into two levels is in some ways a shame, but having spent many a cold day freezing in these ancient halls, I don’t begrudge them some creature comforts!
