The taste of Wales’ gentry will be under the spotlight in this week’s programme, which will be looking at a variety of large country houses. They will reflect the changing fashions over four centuries, and will reveal a lot about the whims of the owners.

Camping it Up in Llanfrothen

The manor house which represents the best of 20th Century taste actually dates back to the 1660s, but was totally refurbished following a fire in 1951. Plas Brondanw in Llanfrothen was renovated by its owner, the inspirational architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who gathered together features from a variety of influences to create a unique collection of styles.

The representative of the 17th Century is the impressive Tredegar House in Newport : click here for the official site, or here to visit the site of the Friends of Tredegar House. Look out for the fantastic wooden carvings around the house: the Morgans of Tredegar certainly had no qualms about displaying their wealth.

Nanteos near Aberystwyth reflects 18th Century tastes and Plas Glansevern near Welshpool shows what fashions were hot during the early nineteenth century. The general pattern that becomes clear is that the owners of the great country houses of Wales were fond of extravagant and vivid designs, that seem over-the-top in comparison with today’s more subtle styles.
