Rhiwbina Garden Suburb

Good taste and design is also the story behind our visit to Rhiwbina Garden suburb, built from 1913. This reaction against city centre slums set out to provide good design for all at an affordable price, and was established as a co-operative company so that residents were simultaneously landlord and tenant. Laid out to designs provided by no less than Raymond Unwin (of Letchworth & Hampstead Garden Suburb fame), the cottages display a strong Arts & Crafts influence. The example we visit has been lovingly restored by photographer Huw Walters and his partner,

'I love the country, but I need to be near the city for work', comments Huw, 'This was the perfect compromise as it feels like a village, there is lots of space and trees, and you get a strong sense that it is a healthy place to live.'

Now protected by Grade II listing and Conservation Area status, this marvelous example of suburban planning is now guaranteed to survive intact, even though the original Garden Suburb company has long been dissolved.
