Owain Gwynedd d.1170
Introduction
Reign: 1137-1170
Kingdom: Powys, Gwynedd
Owain Gwynedd was Gruffudd ap Cynan’s son and during his reign as Prince he expanded upon the successes of his father. He fought a successful campaign against the Normans and his reign is described today as a ‘Golden Age' for Welsh literature. Owain was the first to declare himself ‘Prince of Wales’ instead of ‘King’ – it seems many of the lesser Lords called themselves kings.
