Queen Anne Style

At the end of the Victorian period, when Penralltddu, Cardigan was built, house design was becoming simpler.

This was a reaction to some of the pastiche ‘over the top’ Victorian designs where you’d get houses packed with architectural details that didn’t really hang together all that well.

The new style of houses that moved against the industrially produced ‘pastiche’ homes were often rendered and painted white, and contrasted with red bricks.

Sometimes this is referred to as the Queen Anne style, as some houses were copies of the early Queen Anne period. It has no real connection with the architecture of Queen Anne herself who reigned from 1702 to 1714.

The term was used to refer to any historic-looking new home in the red and white style.

At Penralltddu, Cardigan, the red bricks are made by the Cardigan brick company. If you look around the town of Cardigan you’ll see some beautiful terracotta type bricks made in the town in the late nineteenth century. Often they were moulded with decorative patterns.
