Sometimes living in the town doesn’t feel urban at all…such as here at Penrallt Ddu. With acres of land and peace and quiet, you wouldn’t believe that this house is, in fact, in the very heart of the town.
It isn’t an extraordinary house, but it is nicely designed. Built around 1900, this is a pleasant villa of the Edwardian era built in the Queen Anne style. [Focus point]
This main gable elevation is very fancy. The fancy doors and windows were available from catalogues ready-made.
This was obviously built to be one of the best houses in town, and I think it succeeds. It was built for one of the local solicitors but most of the history of this place is associated with its life as the town vet's. This is where the vet lived, and where he operated. In fact it is a historic site – this is where the first artificial insemination took place in Wales in the 1940s. The present owner’s father was a pioneer of the process.
The surgery is now a dining room, but this room still retains the original cabinets from the dispensary.
The staircase is the main feature, and looks great with this red wallpaper. A lot of money has been spent on this space – the woodwork is great quality, as is the stained glass.
