Caerynwch has always been intimately linked with the fortunes of Dolgellau. Even in modern times many people knew of it as it was a hotel for years and the location of many a local Wedding reception. Today it is a private house once again.
Caerynwch was commissioned by Richard Richards who had married the heiress of the adjacent Plas Hen in 1785. By 1817 he had become Chief Baron of the Exchequer at Westminster and Lord Chancellor Eldon’s right-hand man. Caerynwch’s fortunes were therefore secure!
It was built in 1801-4 by Joseph Bromfield of Shrewsbury. It is a Regency villa, solidly built in local stone.
The house was placed below the old house (Plas Hen) on a better landscaped site. It has been romantically sited facing across to Cader Idris. The grounds were landscaped in a picturesque manner on the Torrent Walk – one of the chief delights of the area for wealthy Georgian tourists.
