In Llanandras the most common form of medieval house was the hall and cross wing, and that’s exactly what we have here at Upper House.
What has happened here is that the building started as a hall. It was later extended with a fancy cross-wing in 1536. Then since then the formerly open hall has been entirely rebuilt in the seventeeth century as a storeyed house.
It was built as the home of a wealthy wool merchant from Ludlow. It is likely that the gable was built in an elaborate style facing the church so that the whole congregation could see how wealthy and fashionable the family were every time they came to worship.
