Savoy Theatre

[ VIDEO ]

The Savoy opened in 1927 as The New Picture House. It was a remodeling of an earlier building, which was a remodeling of an earlier building itself.

They say that this is the oldest theatre site in Wales as there has been a theatre on this site since the Elizabethan period.

But all we can see today dates from either 1927, or possibly, the auditorium that was here when it was remodeled in 1910 as the Living Picture Palace and Rinkeries when it was the roller-skating rink for the White Swan hotel.

Today it is owned by a small local trust and runs as a cinema as a not for profit venture. Nobody has dressed this place up for tourists, it is a real cinema showing blockbuster films, and its restoration is a great indicator of how the people of Monmouth fight to protect their heritage.
